duty of care to protect their employees and customers from harm in the workplace. In addition, many insurers view regular pat testing as an essential condition of their insurance contracts.

Electricity at work regulations 1989 Regulation 4 (2): 'As may be necessary to prevent danger all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent so far as is reasonably practicable such danger.'

To meet the requirements of the 1989 Electricity at work regulations, it is widely regarded to be necessary to implement a programme of planned inspection and testing of portable appliances.

In the Health & Safety At Work Act 1974, all employers have a legal duty to provide safe plant and equipment and every employer must ensure that portable appliances must be maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and good repair.

What needs a PAT test?

        • Moveable equipment (Transportable) e.g. air conditioning unit, electric fire, till
        • Stationary equipment or appliances e.g. fridge freezer, washing machine
        • Hand held equipment or appliances e.g. hair dryer, kettle, extension lead, drill
        • Fixed equipment or appliances e.g. electric heaters

How often should a PAT test be carried out?

There is no set requirement as to how often PAT testing should be carried out but, its advised to be done once every year. As a rule of thumb also, visual inspections should be carried out by the user at each use to check for obvious defect e.g. breaks in cable ect.
